If, in the late 1940s, you had wanted to make a list of the biggest names in British contemporary art of the time, the chances are Graham Sutherland would have been in there, alongside Henry Moore, John Piper and Ben Nicholson.

Yet since the 1970s his star has rather waned. Yes, the occasional masterwork still gets a lot of attention, but overall his work feels rather out of favour, despite him being a sort of founding father of Neo-romanticism, a gorgeous printmaker and a very stylish painter and designer. He was also one of the first artists to support and promote the then virtually unknown Francis Bacon!
