Here at monograph we specialise in books and catalogues about British art, with a particular focus on Modern British and twentieth-century art.

I have been working with Modern British and twentieth-century art for well over thirty years. During that time, I have learned the value of having the right reference works to hand; being able to find the paintings and sculpture discussed in catalogues, monographs and biographies matters to those working professionally with art, and helps collectors understand how the works they own fit into the wider picture of a period.

Books with a history

Many of our books come from the libraries of other collectors, often built with care over decades and with a particular focus, such as the volumes from the collection of Gordon & Ursula Bowyer. When a book moves on to a new owner, it can continue its work of informing a new generation of readers.

Contextual descriptions

When books arrive with us, we first check their condition and completeness. Many are volumes we know from our own research, including their particular qualities and foibles. We photograph the covers and selected pages, gather the important details, and write a short appraisal of each book, its relative importance in the literature on the artist or period, and other factors that may appeal to a reader.

Our aim is to give you a clear view of the copy itself and a sense of the place it may hold on the shelf, in a collection, or in your research.
