Published during the darkest days of World War II, Piper's illuminating and well-written advocacy of the Romantic tradition in British art is still very much worth reading. Knowing as we do how the next few years played out, we can now see how much of the art of the time, from Piper and his contemporaries, had a strong romantic element and would indeed come to be known as 'neo-romantic'.
If you are interested in the work of Craxton, Vaughan, Sutherland, Minton and others of that ilk, then this is a very interesting read.
