British Constructivism

The post-war period in Britain saw a real focus on constructed art - it drew on the pioneers of Modernism and abstraction, both from Europe and at home but it became a very particular form of making.

Perhaps best typified by the relief works of artists like Victor Pasmore, Anthony Hill, Gillian Wise and Kenneth and Mary Martin, the exhibitions also encompassed others more broadly associated with abstraction, such as Terry Frost, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Ben Nicholson.

Relatively neglected, both commercially and critically, until the 1980s and 1990s, this fascinating manifestation of British art continues to inspire.
