Art, architecture and design in Europe

Although monograph is focussed on British art, we never forget that so many of the artists we cover had long friendships and associations with their contemporaries in Europe.

Visits to important exhibitions and competitions such as the Venice Biennale or Documenta made for opportunities to catch up with developments throughout Europe

Political events too shaped these relationships the other way too - the 1930s saw a huge swathe of artists, architects, designers and other cultural figures move to Britain to escape persecution on the mainland, and their contribution to the arts in Britain was immense, permeating right through to the present day.
