A contentious and oft-debated title for this grouping of artists, it nevertheless has become a shorthand for the painters who, mostly in London, pursued a figurative trajectory in the decades after 1950 when abstraction seemed to have the upper hand.

Now we tend to look at the quality of the work and marvel that these painters ever were seen as out of fashion!
