Although, the days of seeing Lowry as just a 'matchstick men' painter have thankfully passed, he is still an artist who is sometimes trivialised by the art world, partly I suspect because his work is genuinely popular.
His drawings, particularly those from the 1930s and 1940s, are for me a marvellous achievement - his ability to capture the essence of a corner of a working town is quite remarkable.
This 1963 publication, written by Mervyn Levy, someone who knew Lowry well (and collected his work), was the first book to take a comprehensive look at Lowry’s drawings and to recognise their importance both in connection with his paintings and as works of art in their own right.
It was followed in 1973 by a revised and expanded version (which we also have in stock!) but the two tend to work as complementary to each other and most Lowry collectors and enthusiasts I know have both volumes on their shelves.
