I well remember using a well-worn copy of this book during my MA studies, and it was an absolute fount of information in my studies of Elizabethan architecture. The 'prodigy houses' designed by Smythson, such as Hardwick, are key elements in the development of a new style of domestic (grand domestic, I grant!) architecture in England in the later c16th and which would then again become influential in the c19th revival of those styles.
Approachably written, this is nevertheless a standard work on the subject. Well-illustrated and a must for the shelves of anyone interested in the Elizabethan world.
