Butler was one of the stars of the explosion of creativity in British sculpture in the post-war years. Yet when he died in 1981, he had faded from view somewhat. 

This catalogue, produced to accompany the Tate retrospective in 1983, was for many years the most useful resource we had for Butler's career, and it is also lavishly filled with his own photographs of his sculptures. Informative, interesting and complete with a comprehensive bibliography and exhibition listing, it remains a very good way to get to grips with a sculptor whose work is powerful but never easy to approach.
