Artist: Eric Ravilious
Author: Anne Ullmann (ed.)
Publisher: The Fleece Press
Date: 2002
Condition: A very clean copy of this scarce volume, from a limited edition of 750 copies; the linen covers clean but with a couple of fly-spots, internally apparently little-read.
This beautifully produced limited edition book is a catalogue raisonne of sorts, covering as it does the complete output of Ravilious' work from September 1939 to September 1942.
Killed while on active service in September 1942 at the age of 39, Ravilious is now rightly hailed as being a significant figure whose distinctive style in watercolour painting gave us a body of works that present the various facets of military life, particularly maritime and airborne.
Extensively illustrated throughout, it also reproduces much of Ravilious' correspondence with friends and family during this period, shedding light on the strains and stresses of military life on an artist.
