Originally published in 1989 to accompany an exhibition of the same title at Kunstmuseum, Basel, this major work of scholarship covers the artist's focus on the theme of The Bathers during a period of over thirty years. It brings together nearly 200 works. Krumrine's text explores the artist within his social context, both with friends like Emile Zola and the wider evolution of French society and culture of the time.
