This auction, held in the grand location of Castle Howard, was a fund-raiser for the York Minster Fund, established in 1967 by the then Earl of Scarbrough, to counter the recent discovery that the central tower of the Minster was effectively sinking under its own weight. The fund continues to work, helping to conserve this amazing medieval building.

The list of donors to this Sotheby's auction is quite a gazetteer of the titled of the day; Dukes, Earls, Lords and a Marquess all donated, as did artists, galleries, collectors and a host of others all contributed paintings, furniture, works of art, silver and other choice pieces making for a varied but rather interesting selection of lots. As an evening sale (black tie, of course) starting at 9pm on 6th April 1968, it would have coincided rather curiously with the tv broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall of the 13th Eurovision Song Contest where Cliff Richard's 'Congratulations' would be pipped to the post by just one point.
