Artist: Paul Klee
Author: James Thrall Soby
Publisher: MoMA
Date: 1949
Condition: Apart from a slight crease to the upper corner, this catalogue is in very clean and tidy condition. The matt card covers have been protected by an original tan-coloured onion-skin tissue which has kept them in very good condition (I have illustrated without this). Internally, there is a very faint mark from a paperclip on the front endpaper, but otherwise very good. Illustrated throughout in black and white with two colour plates. Quite a scarce catalogue in good condition.
Published to accompany the 1949 MoMA exhibition of Klee's work, largely loaned from the Klee Foundation in Berne, and with a subsequent loan tour to six further large American museums, this delightful exhibition was probably one of the main factors in the establishment of a really strong interest in his work by US collectors through the 1950s and 1960s. A survey show of works, the introductory essay by James Thrall Soby makes a very interesting read.
