Artist: Piet Mondrian
Author: Georg Schmidt
Publisher: Editions Galerie Beyeler Basel
Date: 1965
Condition: A generally very good copy of this lavish hardback catalogue, complete with original dust wrapper protected by mylar (period, I believe) which, despite one or two chips and minor tears, has kept the dust wrapper very clean and tidy. The ivory linen boards with blue embossed title are clean too, barring one spot of foxing to the top corner of the cover. Internally this is a very clean catalogue, with very high quality tipped-in plates throughout, mostly colour. Text in German.
Like many of the Beyeler productions, this book is a superb example of how to make an exhibition catalogue feel really special. Not only are the paintings included some of the artist's very best work, they are presented beautifully, given space to breathe and speak. The contents are amazing - any modern curator wishing to assemble a Mondrian exhibition might feel rather intimidated by the collection here presented.
An exceptionally stylish production that even at sixty years old, sets the bar very high!
