Artist: Juan Gris
Author: Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler and John Russell
Publisher: Marlborough
Date: 1958
Condition: Very clean and tidy copy, some minor handling marks to the edges of the covers, but otherwise very crisp. Fabulous red inside front and back covers really set off the olive green covers, a very neat design touch!

An early Marlborough catalogue, it already includes many of the touches that would make them one of the most powerful galleries in the world with their professional and impressive approach to selling. The catalogue has lovely design, simple but clear, there are copious illustrations (b/w) and the premise for the show is to honour Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler's fifty years in the art world. By feting one of the giants of the inter-war dealing world in this way, with an exhibition of the work of an artist D-HK had championed was a very clear statement that 'we're the big boys now'!

Besides all this, Gris is a fascinating and sadly short-lived artist whose art is amazing and offers a less well-known but colourful alternative to the tonal cubism of Picasso and Braque.
