This catalogue of a 1979 touring exhibition is still a remarkably informative volume. Although mostly illustrated in black and white, the entries are complex and plentiful and the whole volume helps to give a sense of Sargent's part in creating an image of a period no less pervasive than Holbein's imagery of the court of Henry VIII.
