Piper's eye was always active, and over the decades he made plenty of sketches of places and buildings that attracted him. In 1967 he held an exhibition at the Brook Street Gallery of sketches done in France, England and Italy. As he puts it, 'things that I wanted to remember, or that roused lively thoughts of further development as drawings or paintings.'
