Whilst Piper is a well-documented figure in mid-century British art, this wonderful biography by Frances Spalding covers both John and his wife Myfanwy and their long life together. Looking at not only John's work as an artist but also Myfanwy's important contribution to publishing and music in the late 1930's and beyond, Spalding conjures up a rich impression of the world they created at Fawley Bottom, their Oxfordshire home, a place filled with art, friends, conversation and ideas.
A highly interesting and enjoyable book.
