Published to accompany the second of two exhibitions curated by noted Piper specialist David Fraser Jenkins which looked at particular decades in the artist's career, this one, held at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2003, was something of a revelation for many visitors. Known largely as a painter of landscape and architecture, Piper had however had a very significant period as an abstract artist in the 1930s and whilst he reverted to a more figurative style later, the lessons learned in that decade informed much of his work for the rest of his career.
A very useful catalogue.
