Condition: The first edition hardback, with the original unclipped colour printed dust wrapper over green and gilt-embossed boards. A few handling marks to the edges of the wrapper. Internally this copy is in excellent condition, read but very clean, tidy and unmarked.

Gasquet's book, originally published in French in 1921 but only available in English with this 1991 printing, is part memoir, part biography and part imagined interpretation of Cezanne and his work. The author distils the many conversations he had with the artist over a ten year period into very readable recreated dialogues - not perhaps a truly factual approach but one which allowed him to express and recall the ideas and discussions they had had in life. A very interesting insight into the artist as a person as well as painter.
