Gaudier-Brzeska is a key figure in the early modernist movement in Britain before the outbreak of WWI and although, due to his death in combat in 1915, his output is relatively small and now quite well recorded, the impact on other artists, both at the time and later, has been immense. Henry Moore, for instance, was, as a young sculptor, deeply influenced by Gaudier-Brzeska's work.
This exhibition, at Kettle's Yard in Cambridge, now almost the spiritual home of Gaudier-Brzeska, was in 1983 and marked a point where a newer generation of art historians were looking at his legacy. Touring afterwards to Bristol and York, I have met several collectors who remembered seeing, and loving, this exhibition.
