Published to accompany the major 2001 exhibition held at the Royal Academy which included many of Auerbach’s most significant works, this show really helped fire the reassessment and revival of interest in his paintings. Although he had always been well-respected and supported by a committed group of collectors, the exposure of this exhibition brought his work to the attention of a wider audience at a point where the figurative painters of Auerbach's generation, such as Kossoff, Freud, Andrews, Uglow and others, were beginning to be taken more seriously by the art world.

Beautifully illustrated with a deeply considered selection of major paintings and drawings and with excellent essays by Norman Rosenthal and Catherine Lampert, this catalogue is a very good starting point for someone new to Auerbach's work but is also a great addition to the library of those already familiar with him.
