Artist: Fernand Leger
Author: Douglas Cooper
Publisher: Lund Humphries
Date: 1949
Condition: A first edition hardback copy of this early Leger monograph, with the yellow linen cover embossed with a blue and white design by Leger and black text. There is tiny amount of fading to the top of the blue form on the cover, but otherwise a very clean and tidy copy for its age. Text in French and English, illustrated in French and English, copiously illustrated in black and white as well as several tipped-in colour plates. The inside front cover bears the booksellers label for Alec Tiranti Ltd. Loosely inserted is a period and presumably associated bookmark, plain white card printed 'Fernand Leger £2 2s'
An important monograph on the artist written by a major authority on his work, this book is, by the standards of the day, a rather lavish production and still reads very well. The illustrations are good and well-chosen and overall it feels like a book that demands you have it on your shelf, and especially if you choose to display the wonderful artist-designed cover!
