Published to accompany the 1981 exhibition of McWilliam's work which toured from Belfast to Dublin and Cork, this is very wide-ranging catalogue of McWilliam's work across several decades, highlighting the manifest talent and vision of this important but often overlooked post-war sculptor.
Beginning with the surrealist-influenced work of the 1930s and 40s and then on to the figure sculptures of the 1950s and 60s and beyond, this catalogue is extensively illustrated in black and white. The essays by Judy Marle and T.P.Flanagan are also very informative.
At home in a variety of media and materials, he was also extremely inventive and this catalogue shows very well how strong his sculpture still looks.
His studio and archive has now found a permanent home in Banbridge, Northern Ireland, his hometown, and their displays and exhibitions have done much to advance his reputation. A great place to visit if you are nearby!
