1968 was the centenary of Mackintosh's birth and thus this V&A exhibition was probably the largest and most comprehensive that had been put together by that date. The 60s had seen a revival of interest in both the stylings of Art Nouveau and the early modernism of the Bauhaus pioneers, both camps claiming Mackintosh as a pioneer exemplar.
By presenting such an all-encompassing show, the curators were able to give a very rounded picture of Mackintosh's very particular and individual talents across several very different fields.
