Riley's first major retrospective was held at The Hayward Gallery in 1971 and brought together work from two decades, from her student years to a fully fledged major player in the abstract universe of the 1970s. The range of ideas is already really noticeable, and the ways in which she explores and develops a theme is fascinating to see.
Well-illustrated, filled with information and a very insightful essay by Bryan Robertson, this catalogue (which also features an eye-popping cover by Michael Lauder!) remains an important text for anyone looking at Riley's first two decades.
