Artists: Various
Author: Herbert Read
Publisher: Faber & Faber
Date: 1945
Condition: A first edition of the new and revised edition of Read's 1936 classic study. Complete with original and unclipped dust wrapper, a little grubby at the edges and with small chips to the spine, over the burgundy linen boards with pale blue embossed text. Internally, clean, tidy and unmarked. Considering the wartime restrictions on paperstock etc, this is a very nice example.
Read's new edition included a new chapter on the art of William Hogarth, adding an extra element to a book that had quickly become a standard text on the sociology and concepts of art across the ages. Not an easy read for the modern reader, it is however still a valuable text offering insight into one of the great critics of the day and his thoughts on all manner of different artistic styles and periods.
