In the mid 1970s, Sotheby's were starting to recognise and develop the market for contemporary art and the sales which focussed on the preceding three decades offer a very tempting smorgasbord of delights for the modern reader. This auction, from December 1975, covers European, British and American artists and nearly all the big names are there. As with other catalogues of the period, it is interesting to note which British artists are mixing it here and also who gets those precious colour plates. In this catalogue for example, we have big colour plates for Alan Davie and Peter Blake, whereas two small early Hockneys just get half-page black and whites!
