Artist: Saul Steinberg
Author: Saul Steinberg
Publisher: Penguin Books
Date: 1945
Condition: The first edition, hardback, with illustrated card boards and blue linen spine; some light usage to the covers and internally some very minor handling marks (the paper is quite thin owing to the publication date) and a nearly contemporary ink dedication on the title page, but otherwise a very tidy and pleasing copy of this classic volume.
Steinberg's 1945 publication was the first collection of his cartoons to appear in book form, and included many which had previously appeared in the New Yorker magazine. What is remarkable is how, even after a brief perusal, it becomes clear that his graphic style was one that dictated so much of the imagery of the post-1945 decades. His cartoons on a variety of subjects demonstrate not just an unerring line but also the keenest eye for the foibles of human life.
