The American writer James Lord (1922-2009) had met Alberto Giacometti in Paris in 1952 and the two became friends. He sat for a portrait to Giacometti in 1964 and wrote this account of the experience. It is however more than just a record, being an illuminating insight into not only the artist's process, but the wider elements of the genre, the times and the artist himself. Lord would later produce a definitive biography of Giacometti, published in 1985.
If you want to take a short vacation back to the Paris of the 50s and 60s, then sit yourself down with this book
