Considering the catalogues which the Tate produced for contemporaries like Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore around the same period, this slim volume feels a slightly less exciting production, yet the information within and the gorgeous black and white photography really show off an artist who was very influential on British art.
Despite only spending a relatively short time in the UK (1935-1946), he was a powerful advocate for forward-looking ideas to the Hepworth/Moore/Nicholson generation, as well as being a major influence and role model for later artists such as Peter Lanyon and John Wells. His first-hand experience of the Russian, German and French avant-garde gave powerful credence to his ideas when exposure to those areas for British artists was neither easy or common, and his experiments with industrial and non-art materials paved the way for a whole generation of post-war sculptors.
