Artist: Barbara Hepworth
Authors: William Gibson and Lillian Browse
Publisher: Faber & Faber
Date: 1946
Condition: A lovely clean copy of this early monograph on Hepworth. A first edition, complete with dust wrapper, a few chips, nicks and handling marks, but considering the age and date of publication, a very good example.
The first monograph on Hepworth, this small book packs quite a punch as it includes several very stylish photographs of her early sculpture, plus Gibson's text is interesting and readable.
As an extra element of interest, the co-author (and editor of the Ariel Books on the Arts series) was Lillian Browse, who in 1946 had just formed the Cork Street dealership of Roland, Browse & Delbanco. Lillian was one of several very able and formidable women art dealers in London in the post-war period, and her life story is a fascinating one. I am loving the idea of the pre-publication meetings between Lillian and Barbara, both very determined and accomplished women!
