Loosely inserted is the Sotheby's printed list of both prices achieved and buyers' names.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe catalogue of the single-owner auction at Sotheby's in 1962, the sale of the collection of the writer Somerset Maugham.\u003c\/strong\u003e According to the preface by the owner, his reason for selling seems to have been primarily the fear that they might be stolen from him! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhatever the reason, the sale was one of the early examples of a star-studded evening event that created a blueprint which is still, largely, intact.
